OSD Exclusive: Interview with April Hunter!
June 1st, 2010 | Comments (6)

The OhSoDivalicious family are totally honored at the privilege of getting in touch with April Hunter and being able to interview her, as she so kindly accepted our offer. In the space of a few questions in regard to her wrestling career and her more personal side, we have come to know her as a really friendly, genuine individual with outspoken views on things such as how wrestling isn’t run the way it should be, offering her opinion to back it up. She’s a very talented wrestler, with loads of experience in working with the ladies in TNA and her lovely personality shines through this interview.

She also sent us ten gorgeous photos from a variety of photoshoots and moments in her career, which we’ve decided to share with you guys too. Click on the thumbnails below the interview to view them, April isn’t just a sweet person, she’s stunning too. When you see the pictures, we’re sure you’ll agree. The interview is below, it’s truely a great read.

Thank you for agreeing to do this interview with us, April. How are you doing today?
April Hunter: Wishing it wasn’t raining out. Not only does it make my knees hurt, but my dogs really wanted to go to the dog park….You asked. ;)

Why did you get into the wrestling business?
April Hunter: I was built for it. Tall and strong…I just kind of ended up here since I was in fitness magazines already.

What was it like to be trained by Killer Kowalski?
April Hunter: He was awesome. Grumpy and strict, kind hearted and a stickler for detail. I wouldn’t have wished anyone else to train me. A Kowalski student always stands out. It was the Harvard of wrestling schools.

Alice, a big fan of you, wanted to know who you faced in your first ever match and what your feelings were of that match?
April Hunter: I actually had a few “pre match” matches…where I ran in and did a 2-3 minute spot with someone while managing another guy…my first spot like that was with  John Walters. I was so nervous, even though we’d trained together 4x a week for 1.5 years. My first real match was a mixed tag vs Dawn Marie and Simon Diamond. They were late to the venue…I was hyperventilating with nerves. They were ‘old pros’ though and totally took control. Afterwards, Dawn hung out and gave me a lot of good advice…I’d always appreciated that.

What was your experience like posing in Playboy?
April Hunter: Fun! I’d wanted to do Playboy for so long, when I got the call I was thrilled. Which happened the day before Thanksgiving for me to report to NYC the day after Thanksgiving. I didn’t want to eat ANYTHING!

If you could sum up your time in World Championship Wrestling in one word, what word would that be?
April Hunter: Discombobulated.

In 2002, you worked with Total NonStop Action Wrestling, how would you characterize your time there?
April Hunter: I was their very first female wrestler, so I was thrilled to have a chance to bring womens wrestling to this brand new federation. I was just “happy to be there”, as they say.

In Women’s Extreme Wrestling, you formed a tag team with Talia Madison, named T & A.  What was it like to work with Talia, now known as Velvet Sky?
April Hunter: We were a tag team long before that. Velvet and I were friends and lived near each other. We traveled to so many shows together we just decided to team up and make a go of it. I’m happy she’s done well. I know she really wanted to take wrestling as far as she could.

Who has been your favorite opponent to work with? Why?
April Hunter: Nikki Roxx/Roxxi, simply because she’s good.

Another one of our readers, Wayaa, wants to know how you and JD Maverick met and how you came about being his valet?
April Hunter: We met on a tour in Winnipeg, Canada. I fell for his quick wit & sexiness and figured a great way to get to know him better would be to work with him. That’s right—we girls aren’t much better than the guys are most days!  ;)

In 2007, you decided to retire from wrestling due to injuries. How has your health been since returning to the ring?
April Hunter: Not great now…but I’ve been rehabbing a LOT. I’m pretty much broken, though. I don’t think wrestling will be in my future ever again. After all this rehab, I can’t take the chance of going backwards by something as simple as a bad fall.

In 2009, you returned to the ring in order to help your mother pay for medical bills. How has your mother’s battle of cancer been? How has she been holding up?
April Hunter: She’s doing so-so. We’re keeping fingers crossed. At this point, she’ll be on chemotherapy for the rest of her life if she goes into remission. Thank you for asking.

Abe Simpson wants to know if you watch TNA or WWE?
April Hunter: Neither. I am training full time for fitness and figure competitions and don’t have time, to be honest.

One of our readers, Linda, asked, if you could have a dream match with any WWE Diva, who would it be and what type of match would it be?
April Hunter: Ummm…a match vs Santina Marella? That could be fun.

The same question but this time with Knockouts!
April Hunter: LOL–I brought them all up on the indies. I don’t think there’s one I haven’t worked yet.

What is your biggest pet peeve about the wrestling business and wrestlers?
April Hunter: It’s not run like a BUSINESS. It should be about making money first, making friends last. Not the other way around. The lack of opportunity is tough too. You can be very talented, with the “it” factor and still not make it to TV. If it were a “real” this would not be the case. TNA’s penchant for wanting to have WWE’s babies is annoying. They should be making their own stars instead of clamoring for WWE’s castoffs. And lastly, the class/money separation is staggering. You’re either making something taking bumps or you’re making nothing at all taking bumps. Depends on where you work. And sadly, the fans seem to be brainwashed that you’re only “good” if you’re on WWE TV. Or that “you should join WWE” to get good. LOL. If I had a dollar for every one of those emails I get, I wouldn’t be doing this interview! ;)

Will we ever see you back again in TNA or maybe even in the WWE?
April Hunter: For what? My life is pretty much in fitness now.

If you had to team with one current WWE Diva and one current TNA Knockout in a six woman tag match, who would you pick and why would you pick them?
April Hunter: Neither. I’d pick Sara Del Ray and Annie Social.

How has fitness competition affected your wrestling?
April Hunter: It’s made me realize I should have stayed in it and I’d be at the top of IFBB now instead of just starting out all over again.

Arielle wants to know if you are a natural redhead, or whether you have to dye your hair?
April Hunter: I’m a redhead, but Auburn. I brighten it up.

If we were to raid your music library or your iPod, what kind of music and artists would we find there?
April Hunter: I don’t have an ipod. Can’t you believe it? I got a mini disk player in Japan ages ago and still use that. Mostly hard rock, alt rock and rap. I like anything that makes you feel something. Staind, Dropkick Murphys, Die Toten Hosen, Garbage, Jamiroquai, Linkin Park, AIC, Kid Rock, Public Enemy.

You have your own comic books out, but out of all the comic book greats, which comic book character is your favorite and why?
April Hunter: Code Red. She’s a kick-ass female Bourne type of character who takes what she wants and gets the job done.

Dan wants to know what your favorite TV shows are?
April Hunter: Dexter, True Blood, Nurse Jackie, Bill Maher, Sons of Anarchy.

If you were to be the main star of an upcoming Hollywood blockbuster movie, what would you want the movie to be about and who would you love to be in the movie with?
April Hunter: Red Sonja. Anyone good who can make me look the right size.

Tennille wants to know what is your favorite color?
April Hunter: Many! Orange, teal, red or yellow.

What does the future hold for April Hunter? Where can we see you in action nowadays?
April Hunter: Hmmm-4 places. I’m an NPC Figure competitor…I qualified for my first (huge) National show, which is June 18th in Chicago, for the Junior Nationals. I have a second installment of Code Red coming out and She Hulk. I also do my own (over 18) site, www.AprilHunter.com. If you sign up for my free newsletter on my site, I’ll let you know when I’m in your town. Got quite a few convention appearances coming up from TN to PA to FL to KY this summer.

Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer these questions. Is there anything you like to say to your fans or plug?
April Hunter: Welp, thank you for reading, thank you for following me and thank you for coming to my appearances! Just THANK YOU…because without YOU, there would be no ME.
