The picture is from Velvet Sky’s Rock Out photoshoot.
If you want to do any fancy colouring to the original picture, do it before starting this tutorial. I have left everything the same, except for sharpening it as I thought the base was slightly fuzzy.
Duplicate the layer, by either pressing CTRL+J or going to LAYER > Duplicate Layer. I only know how to do this in Photoshop, sorry!
To make the top layer black and white, there are a few methods.
1. CTRL+SHIFT+U = Desaturate.
2. CTRL+U = Hue/Saturation, make the Saturation level -100.
3. Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. That’s just the long way around #2.
4. I don’t know how to do this outside of Photoshop, but the options should be similar.
Make the top layer invisible – click the eye next to the tiny version – and then work on the bottom (colour) layer. Using the magic wand tool, click on the colour you want to keep (In my case, Velvet’s red top and the roses on her skirt). Hold SHIFT as you click on the bits of colour.
If you end up clicking on parts that you don’t want, press CTRL+ALT+Z and turn down the Tolerance – The higher the number, the more colours it’ll grab.
Make the top layer visible again and click it so that you’re working on it. Press the DELETE button and the colour should show. To get rid of the “ants” dancing around the colour, press CTRL+D (Deselect).
To get a more faded effect, make a new layer and fill it with a dark grey: #1a1a1a. Set that layer to Lighten. I also added this texture under that layer, set to Screen 50%.
There you have it! I hope this tutorial has been helpful. If you’d like any other tutorials of layout/signature styles, don’t be shy to request by tweeting @OSDivalicious_ with suggestions! :)
